Rick Springfield arrested for drink driving

Australian pop star and actor Rick Springfield was arrested for Driving Under the Influence on Sunday night in Malibu.

Springfield was pulled over by a sheriff's deputy at around 8pm Sunday night in his 1963 Corvette. The sheriff became suspicious when Springfield was noticed driving erratically near the Pacific Coast Highway and Trancas Canyon Road.

He was arrested 'without incident' and taken to the Malibu Lost Hills Station, the same station Mel Gibson was taken to in 2006 also on a DUI charge.

Springfield was released on a $5000 bond at around 2am Monday.

61-year old Rick Springfield was born in Sydney but grew up in Melbourne.

In 1971 he joined Melbourne band Zoot and had a number one hit with an acid rock version of The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby'.

When Zoot broke up, Springfield was just 22-years old. He went solo and had a hit in Australia and the USA with 'Speak To The Sky' in 1972.

In the 80s, the hits flowed on the American chart. 'Jessie's Girl', 'I've Done Everything For You', 'Don't Talk To Strangers' and 'Affair of the Heart' made Springfield one of the world's biggest pop stars of the 80s.

In 1982, he won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for 'Jessie's Girl.

In 1981 he also became a soap star, appearing as Dr Noah Drake in General Hospital. In 2005, he returned to the show after a 23-year absence and occasionally appears as a guest star.

He also had a role playing himself in Season 3 of Californication.

Last year he released his autobiography 'Late, Late At Night'. He had been promoting the book on the afternoon of his arrest.
